This is piece below was influenced by the writing prompt “shuffle your playlist and use the first line of the 10th song as your starting line” and therefore the song Without Me by Halsey.
I took the first line and then stopped listening as not to influence me further and so the piece below began.
Your Heart Was Broke
I found you when your heart was broke,
Nothing but grief surrounded you.
As the sun hit my skin,
It shrouded you in darkness.
You let your pain consume you.
As you forgot of joy and passion,
and seeked shelter in your thoughts.
I knew I would not be able to save you from yourself,
but I could plant flowers in your path
and hope you saw them grow.
At first it was frutile.
For your head was so low you could not see them.
And so, with gentle encouragment,
I lifted you.
Not much,
Just enough.
Enough so you could see the green creep between the cracks,
New life forming.
Filling spaces once seen as flaws.
And then, the flowers started to bloom,
and so did you.
You grew taller with each other and reached for the sun together.
You began to chase it,
And your heart was broken no more.
You reasoned that time had saved you,
But you did not see who planted the flowers.
And as I had planted flowers in yours,
Mine had been left neglected.
Overgrown.
And I no longer knew
how I could follow my own.
